Zaakirah Muhammad 0:14

I'm super excited about today's guest on the Living Legacy Podcast, it's Dr Nicole Garner Scott. She's an award winning and highly sought after serial entrepreneur and financial expert, Coach, you name it. She runs the public relations agency called the Garner circle, as well as 100 female entrepreneurs, as well as open for business co working spaces, which is known for women owned businesses and small businesses. So in 2017. She launched Amount financial services. That itself has positioned her as a thought leader, teacher, speaker and even attach speaker. So she was defined as a disruptor. Which who would very much committed to normalizing money taught because how many people really know, and are comfortable with talking about money. So I'm excited about this guest today because April is Financial Literacy Month, so we're gonna talk all things money we're going to talk authentic mental health, and I want to share the story though because his his the thing that she when she's a publicist to the stars, and I am a photographer to some of the stars. We crossed paths a lot. So even though I haven't moved to the Atlanta area officially yet, I was in and out of it so much because my siblings are from there. And so there was an event in 2015. Remember when I said I was an A3C photographer for two years. In 2015, the Garner Cirlce was in charge of the media for that year. So, I was Yeah, I was on my way out I was in and out photographing the conference room. And I'll never forget it because I felt like I was just so ready to move on to the next gig, that I almost, I remember clearly Robert walked up to her and I was like, Hi my name is Zakirah here's my photo, but she was in the middle of talking to Mali Hunter, and I just I just literally walked her back, and then I think goodness patience don't but I just want to feel like Hi I'm the Zaakirah I've got your photos and I'm going. So then we ended up crossing paths again in Memphis, which is where I'm out Audacity was formed at the audacity festival. Remember when I said I was a speaker. So, we crossed paths there too so thank you for officially being on my podcast and I would say officially meeting you, because you know what it's my word, it is. So how are you doing I know it's been so crazy everything is just changing by the minute and I feel like as a publisher there's like. Whoo, how do you handle everything.

Nicole Garner Scott 3:05

I mean, given the state economy and all that.
And because I do have multiple businesses I have financial where I can where I am working with a lot of my clients to help them navigate to
where you know you had job stability maybe a few weeks ago and all of a sudden
that changed very quickly and a lot of the resources that are there, unemployment and everything else goes back.
I'm helping a lot of clients, kind of prioritize their finances right now, which always helps me keep that front of mind for myself mom
family so bring them all down into debt as well.
Oh my PR
communications. So, this is very
valid through all of this, where a
lot of people have slow down
every area of my life.
And you don't have to worry
about the house down. And so I just tell people you know I have a lot of prices
myself, and it's not, you know, rural that we were used to navigating.

Zaakirah Muhammad 4:27

Yeah I hear that I hear that about balancing and I hated that about adjusting, and I also hear about about family now how important do you feel the family played in everything that you do. How important is family and everything that you do.

Family life how much of a vote and you found me life play and everything that you do,

Nicole Garner Scott 5:12

either from entrepreneurship, to what's happened clients I

work with businesses I test myself.

Although,

are surrounded around,

try and have as much time as possible so I can

enjoy badly that I wanted and you know what it

was all bad and it was actually hard for us to

have a child.

Everything else is so the journey has not been easy.

I really wanted to make sure that I could be there for him in as much of a present way. Just make sure that

you know creative life is not just the, you know, in and out,

making sure that we can genuinely be in each other's lives

apart into each other so everything I've done has strategically led me. The type of

mother, and image is individual

that I want to be I don't

even want to max out for myself, you know, where I can't even enjoy life on how like to save her life.

Yoga I like your indulgence and have a happy podcast as well.

You know just want to make sure my level maxed out that I couldn't even stop.

So yeah, that is just a very very intentional

really creating.

Zaakirah Muhammad 7:04

Absolutely. Now I love that you use the word intentional, because I feel like from what I know of what I followed your journey you started out in Atlanta. That's where you are met, and then he'll have bonacci fumble not at all like me also. Then you ended up going to Memphis, and now you're kind of back in it for a lot of Miami areas I feel like it's those two perfect examples of being intentional of whatever has been though then I go to but also, no matter what entrepreneurship journey I'm on it aligns.

Nicole Garner Scott 7:51

And then, my child,

a grandchild logged in

as soon as outside of the backup, they were able to travel again. But you don't feel. I started out with a very geographic.

Like, you know, you mentioned.

coworkers things actually sold to me.

I love

my job and now

we located to South Florida.

Fort Lauderdale Miami area, and

I would love

to do market, and all of that and

absolutely just last Friday processes that are

great for our business,

outside of the US. But I've been doing that for a while, you know, and so I feel it

prepared me I didn't even know.

But yeah, just keep it.

patient independent as possible because

I envision myself,

you know, always happens in foundation you come back to but if I want to go in, you know, who was older and it's like, hey, he wants to

study abroad and I'm like wow,

you know, I mean, I just want the flexibility.

But at least I have the opposite.

Just because of how

Zaakirah Muhammad 10:03

I love that I definitely can see how being the mode or being an entrepreneur just to start in Nisha they've already done you've established for this time I can kind of agree, I mean, even though I start out in photography as soon as I transition to social media podcasting everything is remote I don't have to be in one place. So I think that's the best part of entrepreneurship to being able to be flexible. So let's jump into our day the main agenda of today's conversation of what do you currently do okay we did say that April 8 Financial Literacy Month so what do you currently do calling.

Nicole Garner Scott 10:54

And the mission of

our company is to help color to break

the poverty cycle, and to create reasonable, households, and long term generational wealth.

And so a lot of what I do is just creating systems.

Now and accountability for a lot of our clients to just really getting their finances in the coverage that they want to go. Really. We do a lot of.

Now

return back to that but a lot of what I found is that many of us are stuck there.

Our community that

should never be a reason that two women are working at the same company. And they're getting paid.

Just because you know what you want,

having that conversation.

There shouldn't be, you know, another woman. Space

doesn't know what to charge property value space where you guys could you have that talk about when he

learned

how to charge how to price

just all those different things. If you don't even have personal life. If you just purchase a house, and I'm looking at questions in the house. Then we should be able to openly talk about

finances. And so, in other community those conversations happen a lot in our communities. We have so much

layered around

money conversations where we feel like

money. That's how people brought up. Money is evil,

or you, you know, don't worry about my personal cat my wallet. I mean, all these things that we felt like were to be true, have been the most

disadvantaged to us.

Unity, and so

we decided to create a lot of spaces where we could easily have conversation, share resources and celebrate each other's wins, and even financial I have a membership. And it's called common love membership, where we just make the act of being wealthy more common, you know for somebody less we feel like wealth is far out of reach, mystical land and hope for you to live and, you know, see the light of day to be wealthy is actually very common. Once you really understand purpose and money, and how to use money

in a way that can create long term

wealth.

So, we have our Commonwealth membership. and it really gives a chance for us to celebrate.

And so you know if you're in a space where

you're in a space with no one's really celebrating you people you love journey.

That is a very discouraging right so on which

way so

so yeah so the

big part. What I do within.

Just to give blueprints and

accountabilities, a lot of, You know a lot of people are operated.

You know, with their family, their parents,

their parents as far as financial decisions.

So,

some focus on

Zaakirah Muhammad 15:18

that yeah you definitely talked about all the important thing the fact that for the longest time especially an African American and any minority community that money talks on taboo. And I feel like also in order for any, especially woman author to grow out of that mindset. We got to talk about it. we've got to have tools and resources that actually help us to actually implement those changes. So aside from the plenty of resources that you offer, but what really kind of got you. What light bulb went off as far as realizing that the service among financial services isn't needed in my head right now.

Nicole Garner Scott 16:13

Time people

can have Barry live on the edge

right like you might have spent, or started taking it to the floor,

or to retirement

because we felt like hey,

this is

for you may have been not profiting at the time

or to pay off.

You know all these different things.

operating out of line profit.

And so, right now, our main thing is

looking at your

property, first. Think of how do you manage your income right now. And what does the future hold for you. So there's a lot of things coming

everyone's

way right every time you open up your computer, it's coming out, rent

is something that you have to understand what

nutrients look like, right.

So, I'll give an example

as to why

many of us feel like okay,

you know I'm a new business I'm just, you know, I just don't feel like paying taxes i want to file,

what have you. I want

you to take out another loan, you just talk to government that your business doesn't make any money so why would they

loan money to you, and you're telling them that you have no money to pay and, you know, no way to pay them back and so.

So those are

services that we're helping people with gentleman strategize come up with a real good financial plan for the rest of the year so that your bounce back is through the roof. And that you're not bottom out during this time either to see a lot of people who potentially could be swallowed up that day. And so you have to be very proactive.

Zaakirah Muhammad 18:17

Absolutely. I think I agree with proactive because that's the thing we can see what's happening and we can choose to ignore it and we can choose to do something about it we can see all these emails and all these Instagram Live and be bombarded by it, or inspired by it. So, so what, um, what else do you have coming up any more virtual events, any more courses any more book well can we kind of take advantage of working with you.

Nicole Garner Scott 18:55

You'll be able to join

our

experts that we're bringing in to help people who want to get into investing in the

stock market or

other types of investment.

We have specialists that come in to just help you figure out what do you need to do better insurance, life insurance insurance.

We have people that are coming in and just help you start from the basics like, maybe, you know, maybe you want to be 4045 years old, and never really had more conversations. You're going to feel comfortable

coming into this

question because.

So, if you're just starting, all the way up to your rent and

we're having courses information. Right.

And then also, in the

summer I have

an academic

publishing,

and that really just helps you get your wife, ready for the type of money that you want to come into your life so everybody said they want to continue the years, but if you were to get that today, right I gotta

have all the

lights.

So,

you know, getting mine.

Zaakirah Muhammad 20:23

Absolutely. I love that now here's the question and I'm sure, a few men listening who, what makes you different from any other financial coach,

Nicole Garner Scott 20:43

lot of things the hard way.

So a big flop there relate to cultural

sensitivities.

Some of the money decisions that you make it have nothing

to do with

whether you want to stand legit or have the

much trauma tied

into a lot of decisions

like financials

and that might be, you know half

a year that you feel

like you're in

your family to make this type

of money, you might not have boundaries in place to be. All your friends,

how they're going to pay their bills I mean there's so many deeper things to that.

And so I've never seen

a play so this, you know, black and white. That's

coming up

a spreadsheet.

How okay to

figure out what's your credit score.

But it is deeper intertwine there. Then, you'll, you know, you'll get enough for the first six months in the fall right back off again so we have a very, very hard to

get all those things together, and then we get

to like you have some people

will just tell you put your money

here for why watching money here.

What, what does that mean for my mom.

And so,

you know, all my coaches on

my team we all have Spirit, teaching, and many of them have

hardships that you know, people have bankruptcy, and they figured out how to get that

have been

getting their houses foreclosed turned around. That's a completely

different way of understanding it's like having a preacher. We have Krishna says something like oh this message is right on time

I understand you have a teacher that you live in in a house

that was a little bit harder to

study and to learn and also didn't have any empathy, as they're teaching along the way and so that's a big part of like a lot of our coaches are able to play that empathy and have it be understated.

Zaakirah Muhammad 23:31

I love that, I love that yeah I'm actually really glad that you mentioned in the boundary. I also feel like that's a part of a lot of mindset shift that a lot of women, I feel have to make that fear that fear of what if like what if I'm not around the right support system so I'm very glad you mentioned boundaries. Right now I have a fun question for you, but before we get into the end of the episode so I have a phone question for you, when this is all over. What is the first place you want to travel to

Nicole Garner Scott 24:19

not we'll just push it back, but

we are

areas that would not have gone to

that state.

Yeah, we're looking at

you know just just more places. And then of course

like all the things you start to take for granted. I travel around a lot.

So, you know, even just like some travel, we live in Florida. All the beaches are,

you know, stay at home and I just can't find

the common experiences.

Zaakirah Muhammad 25:26

Yeah. Yeah, I agree with the simple theme that we've forgotten about who you take advantage of especially the beach you know especially for example I went on to Florida for like six months in 2017 2017 2018, and I live right around the corner from the beach, and I only went once in the segment that I was there so it's it's things like that. Now, I'm going to include the link that you mentioned so far in our Show Notes for this episode. So definitely be sure to go to the website to check it out but where can we find you on social media.

Nicole Garner Scott 26:08

Business is no financial

financial website in the same amount financial matters.

Zaakirah Muhammad 26:21

Thank you. okay now if no one has done anything from that episode if everything out the new episode went live pastor Hey, what is one thing that you want the listeners to take away from this episode,

Nicole Garner Scott 26:43

lot of us have been like out of our control and

we're no longer in

power,

control yourself

right where do I get help, you know, could you back.

Prayer. But, you know, whatever those things are you want to take this time especially if we gain power

to control your narrative, your story.

Zaakirah Muhammad 27:26

I love that. I'm definitely going to put that in a quote.

Well thank you, Nicole.

Yes we.
